Varsha Masa, Dina & Hora Bala

In this article, I will be writing about Varsha, Masa, Dina and Hora Balas (Aka Varshadi Balas) which is part of the topic of Shadbhala. Shadbhala represents 6 fold strengths of a graha. The shadbhala is divided into 6 parts which is known as Stana Bala, Dig Bala, Kala Bala, Drik Bala, Naisargika bala, Chestabala.

Out of this Kalabala (Temporal Strength) can be further sub divided into catergories such as Varshadi Balas (Varsha, Masa Dina and Hora Balas), Divaratri Bala, Paksha Bala, Thribhaga Bala, Ayana Bala, Yuddha Bala.

For the shadbhala calculation, Varsha Lord will be given 15 Virupas/Sashtiyamsas. Masa Lord will be given 30 Virupas/Sashtiyamsas. Vaara Lord will be given 45 Virupas/Sashtiyamsas. And Hora Lord provided 60. Hora lord is very easy to be determined and thus will not be covered in this article.

In today, topic I will be speaking about Varshadi Bala (aka Varsha, Masa Dina and Hora Balas)

Firstly, Varsha Lord is referred to as the lord of the year of Birth. Saavana Days refers to a day from one sunrise to another sunrise. The number of saavana days elapsed from the beginning of creation(known as epoch day) to the day of birth of a particular native is known as Srishyadi Ahargana which is a very difficult form of calculation which is actually provided in Surya Siddhantha. For example, in BPHS text by Girish Chand Sharma in pg 394 it is stated that Srishyadi Ahargana for year 1979 (Vikrami) Magha Month 5th thithi (Panchami) of Sukla Paksha the Aghargana is 7,14,40,41,31,603 days. However, these days needs verification as in my own experience I have noted that various pundits have provided different days for the ahargana calculation.

To make calculation easier, abbreviated aharganas are actually provided in various books. Example in page 396 of BPHS by GC Sharma there is a table for Speculum of Abbreviated Ahargan for month of Jan. In the same manner, in BV Raman’s book bhava and Graha Balas there is a table for Aharghana (Abbreviated) pg 110. Abbreviated means, these tables can be used for calculation to derive the year of the lord which will yield the same results if one uses the Srishyadi Ahargana.

Now lets move to the calculations.

To calculate Varsha Lord strength/Abdadhipathi.

Using example in pg 395 of GC sharma Book. Native born on 2 June 1951.

Abbreviated Aharghana for Jan 0 1951 is 53089 days. From jan to Jun 2 is 153 days (refer to page 399 of BPHS GC sharma).

53089 days + 153 days = 53242 days = Abbreviated Aharghana.

Divide sum by 360, reject the remainder, multiply by 3, add 1 and divide by 7. Final Remainder will be the day counted from Sunday. (NOTE: If you are using BV Raman book of Bhava and Graha balas. Then the abbreviated Aharghana Epoch’s start day is Wednesday. In the below example it’s Sunday.

53242 /360 = 147 (reject remainder)

147 X 3 = 441

441+ 1 = 442

442 /7 and take the remainder = 1.

1 means the Varsha Lord is Sunday. Sun will be given 15 Virupas/Sashtiyamsas.

To calculate Masapathi. (Lord of the Month)

Same Ahargana divide by 30, reject remainder, multiply quotient by 2, add 1, divide by 7.

53242/30 = 1774 (Reject remainder)

1774 X 2 = 3548

3548 + 1= 3549

3549/7 and take the remainder = 0

Therefore, Masa Lord is saturday. Saturday and Saturn is given 30 Virupas/Sashtiyamsas.

Now coming to Vara Lord/Dinapati strength.

Same Ahargana divide by 7, remainder will indicate day of the week.

53242/7 remainder = 0. Therefore its Saturday and Saturn is given 45 Virupas/Sashtiyamsas

Hi, welcome to my site on Vedic Astrology. Just a brief introduction about myself. My name is Dinesh and I was born in Singapore. I graduated from Nanyang Technological University Mechanical Engineering in and graduated with Second Upper Class Honours. I was also a recipient of a Marine Scholarship and started of my Career in the Marine field. In 2013, my parents had visited an Astrologer and upon returning home, they told me that the Astrologer had made accurate predictions on specific incidents based on my Eldest Brother’s life. I was initially surprised to know how can an Astrologer be able to make such accurate predictions even without knowing him personally. Then one day, I stumbled upon a Book (Fundamentals of Indian Astrology by Kannan). I was completely glued to the book and completed understanding the book within 2 weeks. I then started visiting Prominent Astrologers in Singapore & India (while i was there) and realized they were able to make accurate predictions about my life. Surprisingly, a few astrologers even predicted I will start reading horoscopes in the future. In retrospect, it is true. I then started reading books and articles on Astrology and eventually completed a certification in Astrology from Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Delhi. I still do attend Distance Education courses whenever any renowned Institutions conduct Astrology Courses. Currently, I practice Astrology to spread the awareness that our Indian Forefathers have passed down to us and also aid people from various walks of life through Astrology. Vedic Astrology is a Gem that the Indian Sages propounded since ancient times. With this knowledge, one will be able to preempt the future and thereby take necessary actions to be cautious during adversities and be a risk taker during fortunate periods.
