How are Nethiram/Jeevan calculated in a Panchang. பஞ்சாங்கத்தில் நெதிரம் ஜீவன் என்றால் என்ன?

“Jeevan” means life, and “Nethiram” means eyes. These are calculated based on the Sun’s placement in a specific Nakshatra.

🔹 Example:

If the Sun is placed in Revathi Nakshatra, then:

Jeevan Calculation:

  • The adjacent Nakshatras (one before and one after) will have a Jeevan value of 0.
  • The 7 Nakshatras (from the adjacent Nakshatras, in both directions) will have a Jeevan value of 0.5 (or 1/2).
  • The 9th Nakshatra on either side of Revathi (Or the nakshatra Sun is posited in) will have the same Nakshatra lord. In this case, Revathi, Jyeshta and Ashleasha belong to the same Nakshatra Lord Mercury. Hence, Jyeshta and Ashleasha will also have a Jeevan value of 0.
  • All remaining Nakshatras will have a Jeevan value of 1.

🔸 Note: Jeevan can only take values of 0, 0.5, or 1.

Nethiram Calculation:

  • From the Sun’s Nakshatra, the three adjacent Nakshatras on either side (i.e., 6 total, including the Nakshatra in which Sun is posited in) will have a Nethiram value of 0.
  • The next four Nakshatras on either side (5th to 8th from the Nakshatra in which Sun is posited) will have a Nethiram value of 1.
  • All remaining Nakshatras beyond that range will have a Nethiram value of 2.

This method is used to assess the vitality (Jeevan) and visual perception or clarity (Nethiram) energetically associated with each Nakshatra, based on the Sun’s position.

Below is an Example of Sun posited in Revathi Nakshatra on the date that is of concern in the Panchang.

Another example where on the date of concern, Sun is posited in Hasta Nakshatra.

Hi, welcome to my site on Vedic Astrology. Just a brief introduction about myself. My name is Dinesh and I was born in Singapore. I graduated from Nanyang Technological University Mechanical Engineering in and graduated with Second Upper Class Honours. I was also a recipient of a Marine Scholarship and started of my Career in the Marine field. In 2013, my parents had visited an Astrologer and upon returning home, they told me that the Astrologer had made accurate predictions on specific incidents based on my Eldest Brother’s life. I was initially surprised to know how can an Astrologer be able to make such accurate predictions even without knowing him personally. Then one day, I stumbled upon a Book (Fundamentals of Indian Astrology by Kannan). I was completely glued to the book and completed understanding the book within 2 weeks. I then started visiting Prominent Astrologers in Singapore & India (while i was there) and realized they were able to make accurate predictions about my life. Surprisingly, a few astrologers even predicted I will start reading horoscopes in the future. In retrospect, it is true. I then started reading books and articles on Astrology and eventually completed a certification in Astrology from Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Delhi. I still do attend Distance Education courses whenever any renowned Institutions conduct Astrology Courses. Currently, I practice Astrology to spread the awareness that our Indian Forefathers have passed down to us and also aid people from various walks of life through Astrology. Vedic Astrology is a Gem that the Indian Sages propounded since ancient times. With this knowledge, one will be able to preempt the future and thereby take necessary actions to be cautious during adversities and be a risk taker during fortunate periods.
