Rule 1:
a. Counting from the female’s nakshatra, count of 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 18, 20, 24 or 26 nakshatra are acceptable. [Example female is Bharany Nakshatra.] Take as Bharany to be 1. 2nd Nakshatra from Bharany will be Krittika which is to be accepted in matching if boy is Krittika. 3rd Nakshatra Rohini is to be avoided. So on so forth.
b. Below table is Taara Balam Table. One can use this as a reference too. Based on the above example, Bharany will be will be considered the Janma Nakshatra, Krittika will be considered as Sampath (Very good to match) and Rohini to be avoided as its the 3rd (Vipat) [Take note: Counting from female’s Nakshtra the 17th, 22nd and 27th Nakshatras are to be avoided even though the below Taara Balam table allows for it]

Exception to Rule 1:
1. Counting from the female Nakshatra, the 12th Star’s 2nd, 3rd,4th Padas are accepted, 14th Stars 1st,2nd & 3rd Padas are accepted and 16th Star’s 1st,2nd and 4th padas are accepted.
Example : Hasta Nakshatra’s (12th Star from Bharany) 2nd, 3rd,4th Pada is accepted in Dina Porutham
2. Some texts claims that if 27th Nakshatra falls on the same raasi, its acceptable and is considered Paramamitra. Example for Bharany (Mesha raasi), 27th Nakshatra is Ashwini (Mesha) which is accepted as both Ashwini & Bharany falls on the same raasi Mesha.
Example Female Nakshatra is Ashwini (Mesha). The 27th Nakshatra will be Revathi(Pisces). Since it falls in different signs it is to be avoided.
3. Ashtama Raasi’s Nakshatras all wont match. Example for Bharany which is Mesha Raasi. The 8th Raasi from Mesha will be Scorpio. All nakshatra in Scorpio to be avoided. Example: Visakha 4th Pada, Anusham and Kettai/Jyestha all to be avoided.
4. If both Male and Female fall under the same Nakshatra it can be accepted at times. If both of them are Rohini, Ardra, Pushya, Makha, Hastam, Thiruvonam à Match is uthamam and very good. [Boy is Rohini and Female is Rohini it is accepted]
5. If both Male and Female fall under the same Nakshatra it can be accepted at times. If both of them are Ashwini, Krittika, Mirugashirisha, Punarpoosam, Uthiram, Chitrai, Anusham, Uthiradam its know as Mathimam (Average Match) and can be matched.
6. If both Male and Female fall under the same following nakshatras, matching should not be done. Bharany, Ayilyam, Purva-falguni, Swathi, Vishaka, Jyestha, Moola, Purvashada, Dhanishta, Sathabhisha, Purva bhdrabad, Uthira bhadrapad, Revathi to be avoided.
7. Take note: If both male and female same nakshatra and same pada, avoid matching. Example both are Rohini Nakshatras and same Nakshatra Pada, matching should be avoided. Example both boy and girl are 3rd Pada of Rohini, avoid matching.
8.Take note: Say Both Boy and Girl are same Raasi. The male’s Nakshtra should take lead. Example female is Bharany Nakshatra. Male Nakshatra should be Ashwini as only after Ashwini comes Bharany.
9.Take Note: Say Boy and Girl is Ashwini. This is Mathimam. The male’s Nakshtra pada should take lead. Example, girl’s Pada is 3rd pada Ashwini. Boy should be 1st/2nd Pada Ashwini. If Girl is 2nd Pada Ashwini, Boy can only be 1st Pada of Ashwini.
10. Take Note: Counting from Girl’s Nakstra Pada, the 88th nakshatra pada should always be avoided. This is known an Vainasigam. Example: Girl is Ashwini 1st Pada. Boy should not be Sharavana 4th Pada. If so, avoid matching them.
